Running Head: COMPASSION AND VAGAL ACTIVITY 1 Affective and Physiological Responses to the Suffering of Others: Compassion and Vagal Activity

چکیده
Compassion is an affective response to another's suffering and a catalyst of prosocial behavior. In the present studies we explore the peripheral physiological changes associated with the experience of compassion. Guided by longstanding theoretical claims, we propose that compassion is associated with activation in the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system through the vagus nerve. Across four studies, participants witnessed others suffer while we recorded physiological measures including heart rate, respiration, skin conductance, and a measure of vagal activity called respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Participants exhibited greater RSA during the compassion induction compared to a neutral control (Study 1), another positive emotion (Study 2), and a prosocial emotion lacking appraisals of another person's suffering (Study 3). Greater RSA during the experience of compassion compared to the neutral or control emotion were often accompanied by lower heart rate and respiration, but no differences in skin conductance. In Study 4, increases in RSA during compassion positively predicted an established composite of compassion-related words, continuous self-reports of compassion, and nonverbal displays of compassion. Compassion, a core affective component of empathy and prosociality, increases parasympathetic activity. (180 Words) Suffering is a defining experience in human social life. The suffering of others evokes strong affective responses in observers. These emotions include feelings of distress, empathic concern for the suffering of another person, coupled with the desire to alleviate that suffering

متن کاملThe Current and Future Role of Heart Rate Variability for Assessing and Training Compassion
The evolution of mammalian caregiving involving hormones, such as oxytocin, vasopressin, and the myelinated vagal nerve as part of the ventral parasympathetic system, enables humans to connect, co-regulate each other's emotions and create prosociality. Compassion-based interventions draw upon a number of specific exercises and strategies to stimulate these physiological processes and create con...
متن کاملMild Traumatic Brain Injury and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: A Review
The often pernicious neuropsychological effects following a mild traumatic brain injury can persist for months or even years. Symptoms associated with head injury can include headaches, orthostatic hypotension, trouble sleeping, slower processing speed, fatigue, and impairments in attention, memory, and executive functioning. These symptoms can be exacerbated as well as maintained via depressio...
متن کاملGains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach
By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
متن کاملImproved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.
BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...
